SARIKEI: Two drainage cleaning and upgrading projects at Sungai Mador and Sungai Binatang (Jalan Chai Hing) have been fully completed, strengthening water flow management and reducing flood risks.

The completed works are expected to improve the efficiency of local drainage systems while supporting the wellbeing and safety of residents in surrounding communities.

Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister and Repok assemblyman Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said proper drainage infrastructure remains essential for sustainable community development.

“Providing and maintaining basic infrastructure such as drainage systems is vital in ensuring the wellbeing and safety of local residents,” he said in a press statement today.

According to Huang, the government continues to prioritise infrastructure development, recognising that effective drainage networks help facilitate water flow, minimise flooding incidents and enhance living conditions.

“We will continue monitoring the implementation of development projects to ensure every allocation provided delivers maximum benefits to the people.”

His remarks followed recent completion verification visits conducted for both projects, aimed at ensuring all works were carried out according to approved specifications and objectives.

For the Sungai Mador project, the verification visit was conducted with Sarikei Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) assistant engineer Mary Rittie, who reviewed completed upgrading works.

Meanwhile, the inspection at Sungai Binatang (Jalan Chai Hing) was carried out together with Sarikei DID assistant engineer Alwami Abdullah to assess the completed drainage improvements.

During both visits, Huang was represented by Wong Soon Mee, who inspected the project sites and verified that the completed works met the required scope.

Huang said the government would continue evaluating infrastructure needs in rural areas and smaller towns to ensure facilities remain relevant and beneficial to communities.

He also expressed appreciation to Sarikei DID and all parties involved for their commitment and cooperation in ensuring the projects were completed smoothly.

The completion of both drainage projects reflects ongoing efforts to improve public infrastructure, strengthen flood mitigation measures and support long-term community development across the constituency.
