SIBU: A cement lorry driver has been detained over a fatal crash with a motorcycle at a traffic light intersection along Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce here on Tuesday (Apr 21).
The victim, identified as Benet Kawit, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Meanwhile, the 50-year-old lorry driver was later detained to facilitate investigations, and initial urine screening found him to be negative for drugs.
Sibu Police Chief, ACP Azari Miskon said preliminary investigations found that the victim had stopped at the intersection before moving off when the traffic light turned green.
However, a cement lorry approaching from the right is believed to have failed to stop despite the light turning red, and collided with the motorcycle.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Azari reminded road users to obey traffic signals and remain vigilant at all times to ensure the safety of all road users.
