SEBUYAU: A 27-year-old lorry driver was killed after his vehicle carrying a load of premix concrete veered into a muddy ditch along Jalan Batang Lupar-Sadong near Kampung Tebeluk here early today (May 21).
The victim, identified as Richmond Pusai, was trapped inside the lorry after the single-vehicle accident believed to have occurred around 5:00 am.
Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said emergency responders received the distress call at 7:06 am and firefighters from the Asajaya station arrived at the scene about 50 kilometres away at 7:56 am.
“Initial information from police indicated that the front tyre of the lorry had burst, causing the driver to lose control before the vehicle skidded into the muddy ditch.
“Rescue operations were difficult as the victim was trapped under a pile of mud inside the lorry.
“A crane and excavator were used to remove the lorry from the ditch and facilitate efforts to extricate the victim,” Bomba spokesperson said in a statement.
The victim was later handed over to police for further action.
Personnel from the police, Civil Defence Force (APM) and Health Ministry were also at the scene.
