SARATOK: Two local men’s bid to outrun police came to an abrupt end after a pursuit along the Roban stretch, with both later testing positive for drugs.
The incident occurred at around 3:30 pm yesterday (Wednesday, July 8) when officers from the mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) unit spotted a suspicious silver Proton Waja while carrying out patrol duties.
Saratok Police Chief, DSP Mathew Manggie, said when the team attempted to stop the car for inspection, the driver sped off, triggering a chase from Roban junction to a roadside house near Kampung Pantar.
“The vehicle eventually came to a stop, where one of the occupants jumped out of the vehicle in an apparent bid to flee on foot.
“Police immediately moved in and arrested both men, although a brief struggle broke out during the arrest. Further checks on the suspects and the vehicle did not uncover any illegal items,” he said.
The suspects were taken to the Saratok Police Station for further actions, where urine screening tests found them positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
Background checks found that the first suspect, a 33-year-old man, has eight prior criminal records, while the second suspect, a 24-year-old man, has no prior record.
Mathew said the case is being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug consumption.
