KUCHING: A group of youth from the Toastmasters International District 87, Division D, visited the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) on Tuesday (May 27), following a special invitation extended by Kho Teck Wan, Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak.
The visit aimed to enhance civic understanding and leadership awareness among members, many of whom were first-time visitors to the legislative complex.
Kho welcomed the delegation and delivered an informative briefing on the history, structure, and functions of the DUN, shedding light on how government decisions were made and how legislation impacted the people.
Her engaging session sparked meaningful discussions among the attendees, offering them a clearer appreciation of the legislative process and its relevance to everyday life.
The highlight of the day was a dialogue session with Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian who shared insights into the responsibilities of elected representatives and the significance of people-centric policymaking.
“Laws passed here are not merely procedures, they shape development, safeguard our future, and reflect the aspirations of all Sarawakians,” he said.
Division D director Dr Lucy Ho Jia Yiing expressed her gratitude for the enriching experience.
“It was more than just a visit — it was a reminder that public speaking is not only about confidence but also about purpose, civic awareness, and the courage to engage with systems that shape our society,” she said.
Meanwhile, Toastmaster Chua Wei Ling of AZAM Toastmasters Club echoed the sentiment, noting how the visit helped her reconnect with her Sarawakian identity.
“As an anak Sarawak returning from overseas, this visit helped me reconnect deeply with my roots.
“It reminded me that we, as Toastmasters, are empowered citizens who can carry the Sarawak spirit forward through leadership, service, and storytelling,” she said.
The visit concluded with renewed inspiration among the Toastmasters to lead with integrity, foster civic-mindedness, and advocate for inclusive, people-oriented governance.
