KUCHING: The Sarawak constituency re-delineation exercise could be completed ahead of the two-year deadline if all stages of the process proceed smoothly.

Sarawak Election Commission (EC) director Abang Noraffian Abang Ibrahim said the commission has up to two years to complete the exercise from the gazettement of the notice of recommendations on Sept 1.

He said while the process could potentially be completed sooner, its duration could not be determined as the EC was required to adhere to all procedures and stages stipulated under the law.

“It is not impossible for the process to be completed earlier than two years, but we cannot predict this as we have to follow all the prescribed stages and processes,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after attending a briefing on the Sarawak constituency re-delineation exercise with the EC at a hotel here last night (Sept 8).

Abang Noraffian stressed that the exercise must be carried out in accordance with the procedures and requirements set out under the Federal Constitution.

He said the EC is required to complete every stage of the process, including the public exhibition, receiving representations and conducting local inquiries, before the re-delineation exercise could be finalised.
