KUCHING: Through diverse initiatives, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has demonstrated a clear vision for the state’s future.

From economic development and environmental sustainability to education and digital transformation, these efforts collectively aim to improve the lives of Sarawakians while positioning the state as a leader in innovation and sustainability.

The impact of these programmes is felt across various sectors and communities, highlighting the Premier’s dedication to creating a balanced, inclusive, and progressive Sarawak.

The Sarawak Tribune has spoken to a few people to get their comments on the above matter.

As a business owner, I have seen firsthand the impact of the Sarawak Premier’s efforts to boost the economy through the post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030. This initiative diversifies the economy by promoting high-value industries such as technology, agriculture, and tourism. In my area, the improved infrastructure — such as better roads and upgraded facilities — has made it easier for us to transport goods and reach more customers. Additionally, the introduction of financial incentives for small and medium enterprises has helped many businesses like mine grow, even after the challenges of the pandemic. The emphasis on rural transformation programs has also been particularly impactful, allowing rural communities to benefit from better connectivity and services. These efforts have improved the standard of living and created more job opportunities for Sarawakians.

One of the most significant achievements of the Sarawak Premier’s dedication to sustainability has been the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), which has made renewable energy a priority. Sarawak is at the forefront of reducing carbon emissions and ensuring energy security by developing hydropower plants and advancing green hydrogen technology. These projects demonstrate the state’s commitment to combating climate change and creating new economic opportunities in green industries. Furthermore, the government has promoted the conservation of our natural resources by implementing policies to protect biodiversity-rich areas like national parks and wildlife reserves.

I greatly appreciate the efforts of the Sarawak Premier to enhance the education system. One of the most impactful programs has been the Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy, which aims to integrate digital technology into schools in the state. Nowadays, students at universities and schools have received upgraded IT equipment and better internet connectivity, enabling them to incorporate online learning into their curriculum. This is especially beneficial for students in rural areas who previously had limited access to educational resources. Additionally, the focus on technical and vocational education and training (TVET) has been transformative. By offering more scholarships and training opportunities, the Premier equips students with the skills needed for the modern workforce, particularly in technology, engineering, and renewable energy. These changes are preparing the next generation to compete on a global stage while ensuring that no one is left behind.

As a student, I see that these students have personally benefited from Sarawak Premier’s digital transformation initiatives. Expan
ding internet connectivity through programmes like the Sarawak Multimedia Authority Rural Broadband Network has been a game-changer. Before this, the village had limited access to reliable internet, making it difficult for the students to participate in online learning or access global information. Now, with better connectivity, they can attend virtual classes, use educational platforms, and even explore scholarship opportunities. The Sarawak ID initiative, which provides a single digital identity for accessing government services, has also made processes like applying for financial aid much more convenient. Moreover, the Premier’s vision for smart cities and digital governance is to create a modern environment where technology is seamlessly integrated into our daily lives.
