KUCHING: Students, school leavers and young Sarawakians seeking direction for their future will have the opportunity to explore both higher education and government career pathways at the upcoming Education Fair and Sarawak Government Career Expo on June 20.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang said the initiative complements the Sarawak government’s efforts to strengthen education and develop a highly skilled generation capable of driving the state’s future growth.

“Education is very important. If you want to build a nation, you have to build its education system. That foundation is so important,” he said during a press conference at SUPP Headquarters here today (June 16).

The one-day programme, organised by SUPP Batu Kitang Youth, will be held from 10 am to 3 pm at SUPP Headquarters and will feature 29 universities, colleges and training institutions offering information on academic programmes, admission requirements, scholarships, financial assistance and future career pathways.

Among the participating institutions are Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), iCATS University College, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Curtin University Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sarawak, Sarawak Skills, CENTEXS and several private colleges and skills-based institutions.

Organising chairman Amy Chong said the fair is designed to cater to students from all academic backgrounds, including those interested in technical and vocational education and training (TVET).

“We are not targeting only excellent students. Some students may prefer learning practical skills rather than pursuing conventional academic pathways, and this fair allows them to discover those opportunities,” she said.

For the first time, the programme will also incorporate the Sarawak Government Career Expo, featuring agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department, Royal Malaysian Customs Academy Sarawak, Social Security Organisation (PERKESO), Land and Survey Department Sarawak, Sarawak Forestry Corporation, Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA) and Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB).

The organisers expect between 200 and 300 visitors, including students, school leavers and members of the public.

This will be the second edition of the education fair, with the previous event held two years ago focusing mainly on higher education institutions.

Also present at the press conference was SUPP N13 Batu Kitang Youth chief Councillor Alvin Chong.
