KUCHING: National mixed doubles shuttler Toh Ee Wei has successfully undergone surgery on her left knee following the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury she sustained during the Singapore Open in May.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) confirmed on Tuesday that the procedure, performed in Melbourne, Australia, was successful.

Ee Wei will now begin the next phase of her recovery as she embarks on a rehabilitation programme aimed at returning to competition.

“I am relieved that the surgery went well and would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming support and well wishes. It means a lot to me,” she said in a statement released by BAM.

“My focus now is on my rehabilitation, and I will give my full commitment to the recovery process. I look forward to returning to the court stronger.”

The update comes a week after Ee Wei shared an emotional message on social media reflecting on the latest setback in a career that has repeatedly tested her resilience.

“Leaving home this time is not about competition. It is a mission and a responsibility – to do everything I can to recover,” she wrote.

Reflecting on the challenges athletes face, Ee Wei said sport has never been solely about winning and losing.

“Many people think sport is only about winning and losing.

“But for us athletes, sport has never been just about victory or defeat.

“More often, it teaches us how to face setbacks, accept failure, and stand back up after falling.”

She said difficult moments often become the greatest lessons.

“But it is in these moments that we truly learn what perseverance means. Not when everything is going well, but when nothing seems certain, and you still choose to continue.

“Every time, I thought it was the hardest moment of my life. Yet every time, I reminded myself: just hold on a little longer. Just keep going a little further.

“Because I truly believe that every dark night we survive becomes strength for tomorrow.”

The ACL injury forced Ee Wei and mixed doubles partner Chen Tang Jie to withdraw from the Indonesia Open after she sustained the partial tear during their Singapore Open quarter-final against India’s Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto while leading 18-16 in the opening game.

BAM said it will continue providing Ee Wei with the necessary medical and rehabilitation support throughout her recovery and wished her every success on the road back to competition.
