BAU: A 72-year-old cyclist succumbed to severe brain injuries after battling for his life for 10 days following a collision with a car early this month.
Bau police chief Supt Mohd Haide A. Rahman said the accident happened along KM1, Jalan Bau-Kuching at around 6am on May 1.
“Initial investigations found that a Perodua Axia, driven by a 23-year-old woman, was travelling from Bau to Kuching when the victim is believed to have suddenly emerged from a junction on the right while descending a hill.
“The driver was unable to avoid the victim in time and crashed into the rear of the bicycle,” he said.
The impact left the man, identified as Wong Jee Hong, with severe head injuries.
He was rushed to Bau Hospital before being transferred to Sarawak General Hospital for further treatment.
Despite undergoing treatment at the hospital’s Neurosurgery High Dependency Unit (HDU), Wong succumbed to his injuries at 2.18pm yesterday (May 10).
Doctors later confirmed the cause of death as traumatic brain injuries.
Mohd Haide said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
