Elderly man’s body recovered from ravine in Miri

MIRI: Fire and Rescue personnel last night recovered the body of a 70-year-old man from a ravine at the city’s iconic Grand Old Lady landmark.

The victim, identified as Wong Ted Voon, was found at a depth of about 30 metres.

A distress call was received at 5.06 pm on Wednesday (Oct 1) and within minutes, a fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle were dispatched from the Miri Sentral fire station.

The first crew arrived on scene at 5.10pm. Using rescue ropes and a basket stretcher, firefighters worked their way down the steep slope before carefully bringing the body back to the roadside. The operation lasted nearly two hours.

Police officers and medical staff from the Ministry of Health assisted at the scene.

Wong’s body was later handed over to the police for further action.

No further details on the circumstances of his death were immediately available.
