KOTA KINABALU: The spirit of patriotism must be translated into efforts to free the people from the shackles of poverty and division, rather than merely commemorating the nation’s independence from colonial rule, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said today.
He said independence is a precious gift that must be cherished and safeguarded through unity, cooperation and a shared commitment to developing the state.
“Let us truly appreciate the meaning of independence. Independence is not merely freedom from colonial rule, but also freedom from the shackles of poverty and division.
“Independence is a gift that we must cherish and defend,” he said at the launch of Sabah’s National Month and the Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign at Menara Kinabalu here.
His speech was delivered by Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, who is also the State Finance Minister.
Hajiji said the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign should not be viewed merely as a ceremonial event, but embraced as an opportunity to strengthen the spirit of patriotism.
He urged Sabahans to fly the Jalur Gemilang throughout the state as a symbol of their love for the nation and commitment to preserving unity.
“May all the people continue to stand united, work together and support one another for a brighter future for Sabah.
“Let this year’s celebration mark a renewed commitment to building a more developed, progressive and prosperous Sabah,” he said.
Hajiji added that the state government would continue advancing its development agenda through the “Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya” (SMJ) 2.0 roadmap to build a more competitive, resilient and prosperous state.
He said the roadmap focuses on sustainable economic growth, human capital development, productivity enhancement, greater competitiveness, the adoption of innovation and technology, as well as inclusive development.
The state government, he added, would also continue to strengthen initiatives that directly benefit the people, including in education, welfare, housing, healthcare, rural development, the empowerment of women and youth, and the provision of higher-quality basic infrastructure and public amenities.
