LUBOK ANTU: The Ministry of Economy has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting rural economic empowerment projects that directly benefit the people, particularly through the development of the aquaculture sector in Batang Ai.

Deputy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib said initiatives such as the People’s Income Initiative (IPR) – INTAN, spearheaded by Borneo Eco Fish Sdn Bhd, not only create job opportunities but also serve as a catalyst for improving the standard of living for local communities.

“The ministry will continue to support projects that demonstrate tangible benefits for rural communities.

“Such initiatives have the potential to strengthen household economies, build skills and at the same time support the nation’s green development agenda,” she said during an official visit to the project site in Batang Ai on Thursday.

The visit was part of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) Borneo Outreach Programme, which focuses on strengthening collaboration between the government and private sector to achieve IPR’s objectives.

In a briefing, Borneo Eco Fish managing director Thomas Hii explained that the integrated project focuses on systematic freshwater fish farming while also providing continuous training for the local community.

The programme also included a site visit and engagement session with residents, offering first-hand insight into the positive impact of the project on rural livelihoods.

With strong government backing, Batang Ai is seen as having the potential to emerge as a model for sustainable and inclusive rural economic development.
