KUCHING: The political landscape in Engkilili remains calm with no visible signs of heightened election activity as the state gears up for the next Sarawak election.

Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa said the constituency continues to enjoy political stability under the leadership of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government led by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“Here in Engkilili, the political situation is still quiet and calm. GPS, under the Premier and represented by me in the Engkilili state constituency, is okay,” he said.

He added that, at present, no opposition party has begun active political movements or campaigning within the constituency.

Asked whether he would defend the seat in the coming election, Rayong said the decision rests entirely with the coalition’s leadership.

“I leave it to the leadership of the Premier. It is his absolute power,” he said, stressing that candidate selection is the prerogative of the GPS leadership.

Rayong said the most important objective is for GPS to secure a convincing mandate in Engkilili so that development efforts can continue uninterrupted.

“It is important that GPS wins big in Engkilili and continues to develop the area and the people towards 2030 in the post-Covid era,” he said.

Widely regarded as one of the most recognisable political figures in the Lubok Antu-Engkilili area, Rayong has remained a prominent presence in Sarawak politics for decades.

Throughout his political career, he has served under several party banners, beginning with the Sarawak National Party, later joining the Sarawak United People’s Party under the former Barisan Nasional administration, before moving to the Parti Sarawak Bersatu and subsequently aligning with GPS through Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

Despite those political transitions, Rayong has maintained a strong electoral record, winning four consecutive state elections since 2006 under different party banners, reflecting sustained personal support among voters.

Political observers attribute his enduring appeal to his extensive grassroots engagement and accessibility, particularly among longhouse communities across Engkilili.

They also point to his consistent advocacy for improved rural infrastructure, including roads, bridges, water and electricity supply, as well as better education, healthcare and agricultural assistance for pepper, rubber and oil palm smallholders.
