KUCHING: An entertainment centre owner was sentenced to a fine of RM9,000 or four months’ imprisonment in default by the Magistrate’s Court here today (Dec 15) for operating without a valid licence from the local authorities.
Donny Chan, 43, pleaded guilty to a charge of providing and running entertainment at a premises without a licence at a building on Jalan Song Thian Cheok at around 2.30 am on Nov 8.
He was charged under Section 5(1) of the Entertainment Ordinance 2000 and is liable to punishment under Section 5(3) of the same Ordinance.
According to the court, a team of police from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Kuching Police Headquarters (Kuching IPD) raided the premises after receiving information that it was operating illegally.
During the raid, officers found the entertainment centre in operation, with three customers present.
The owner failed to produce any valid licence or documents to operate legally.
Several items were seized during the operation, including a laptop, speakers, and various musical instruments.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Asmawi Nur Haqim Mokhtar handled the prosecution, while Donny Chan appeared in court without legal representation.
