MUKAH: A whopping RM19.5 million project to significantly reduce coastal erosion at the Oya Beach here will be implemented by the end of this year.
“The project covering a distance of about two kilometres when implemented is expected to be completed in two years’ time,” revealed Dalat District Council councillor Arini Suhaili, today.
He added that the project has been approved and construction works are scheduled to start in November this year.
Arini said the project was following a special meeting between the Mukah division Draining and Irrigation Department, Mukah community leader Temenggong Hendi Suhai, officials from the Oya sub-district office, community leaders and Mukah District Council councillors.
“An application for the project headed by Hendi was first submitted for approval to the Natural Resources and Environment Minister in April, 2017,” he added.
The project when completed will hopefully be able to reduce coastal erosion and protect the site for the annual Kaul Festival at Oya, which had since been upgraded.
Arini also urged the local community to give their full support and cooperation to ensure the smooth implementation of the project.
“I sincerely hope that the affected landowners will give their full cooperation to ensure that the project is completed as scheduled,” he pointed out.
