KUCHING: The issue of teacher candidates declining placement offers in Sarawak’s interior will be referred to the Education Service Commission (ESC) for further action.

According to Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, the decision regarding actions against these candidates, including the possibility of blacklisting them, falls under the jurisdiction of ESC.

He also acknowledged that the need for teachers in Sarawak remains, particularly in secondary schools, along with some vacancies in primary schools.

“We are quite satisfied. According to data from the State Education Department, approximately 96 per cent of our schools already have teachers for the required subjects. On average, there is only one vacancy per school,” he said while speaking to reporters after launching the Borneo International Robot Tournament (Borneo-IRT) 2025 at Theatre Hotel yesterday (Feb 11).

However, he remains optimistic that graduates from the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG), who are set to complete their studies this June, will be able to fill the existing vacancies.

Borneo-IRT 2025, themed “Robomission Battle: Lego Education SPIKE Prime”, is scheduled to take place from May 7 to 10 at Meritz Hotel in Miri.

The programme aims to engage students aged 9 to 18 in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Among the countries set to participate in the tournament are Macau, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Russia.
