KUCHING: The community has been urged to equip themselves with fire safety knowledge and prevention methods to handle potential emergencies during the Chinese New Year festive season.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said fire or accident cases often happen during festive periods but can be prevented with the right mindset and preparedness.

He added that everyone should take fire safety and prevention seriously as a matter of mindset.

“Your life or your house depends on having this basic knowledge. Whenever you get the opportunity, please undergo fire safety training to understand the 3Ls – ‘lupa, lalai, leka’ (forgetfulness, negligence, and carelessness), learn what to do when a fire breaks out, and more.

“Hence, I want to thank the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) for conducting awareness and educational programs, particularly for kindergarten children, who can absorb and share the knowledge with their families,” he said after officiating the Chinese New Year Fire Safety Campaign at Wisma Wan, Tabuan Jaya today (Jan 21).

The Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government also urged the public to familiarize themselves with fire hydrant locations in their areas and ensure they function properly.

“Do not tell me you do not even know where your fire hydrants are.

“If a fire hydrant is leaking or damaged, please inform Bomba. Better yet, adopt fire hydrants and become your community’s local fire hydrant guardian,” he said.

Sim also hoped to see fewer fire or accident cases during this Chinese New Year in Sarawak so that the community is safe and able to experience joy and happiness during the festive season.

During his speech, Sarawak Bomba director Jamri Masran emphasized their unwavering dedication to raising fire safety and prevention awareness among individuals of diverse ages and backgrounds.

“During the festive seasons, we have identified hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and supermarkets as hotspots for mass gatherings.

“These areas pose potential fire hazards, and we advise all premises owners to be vigilant and increase their fire safety measures,” he said.

Also present at the event were Sarawak Bomba deputy director Tiong Ling Hii, Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, and IJK Construction Sdn Bhd Managing Director Datuk Alex Ting Kuang Kuo.
