Evacuee numbers drop, but over 900 still in PPS

KUCHING: The number of flood evacuees at temporary relief centres (PPS) in the central region of Sarawak is gradually declining as floodwaters recede in some areas, although water levels remain stable in others.

As at 4 pm today, the number of evacuees stood at 907, a decrease of 70 people, compared to 972 yesterday.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) secretariat said that despite the decline, six flood-related PPS remain open to accommodate the affected victims.

Four PPS that recorded a drop in evacuees are Dewan Kompleks Sukan Kanowit (186 victims), Dewan Serbaguna Selangau (103 victims), Asrama Belia Kapit (69 victims), and Dewan Suarah Kapit (104 victims).

Meanwhile, Dewan Komuniti Sibu Jaya and Balai Raya Song continue to shelter 66 and 379 victims respectively, with no changes in numbers.

For landslides, Dewan Masyarakat Kampung Bahagia Jaya Teku in Sibu and Dewan Kampung Sukan in Miri are housing 43 and 40 victims respectively.

As for fire incident, a total of 152 victims are being sheltered at St Benard Church, Rumah Lapie in Bintulu.

Authorities are actively monitoring the situation as relief efforts remain ongoing.
