MURUM assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon is calling relevant agencies to immediately accelerate work on the stalled 50 km agricultural road in Bakun Resettlement Scheme (BRS) in Sungai Asap, describing it as a people-centric project that can no longer be delayed.

He said the road, covering Phase 1 – Package A & B, began in 2019 but remains unfinished nearly six years later, leaving resettled communities without proper access to their agricultural lots.

“I understand there are challenges, but a wait of almost six years is, in my view, far too long,” he said when debating the Supply (2026) Bill, 2025 at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Friday.

He stressed that the project is crucial for families working on the three-acre plots allocated to them when they were relocated to Sungai Asap for the Bakun hydroelectric project 27 years ago.

Chukpai also urged the government to commence Phase 2 (85 km) of the agricultural road without further delay.

“The phase was approved by the Premier during his visit to BRS Sungai Asap in 2021 and must be commenced immediately as the residents along the Phase 2 alignment can no longer wait as well,” he said.

He emphasised that the lack of access roads has become a bottleneck to the socio-economic progress of the BRS, preventing the full utilisation of the land meant to sustain the community.

He further requested clarification from the Land and Survey Department regarding the unresolved surveying of agricultural lots in the Tegulang Resettlement Scheme.

“This matter has created difficulties as the people in this settlement have no stable source of income due to not having officially surveyed agricultural lots to work on.

“I urge the government to find a comprehensive and immediate solution so that socio-economic programmes can be implemented,” he said.
