Factory destroyed, three homes damaged in fire

KUCHING: A factory was completely destroyed while three residential structures were damaged in a fire along Semaba Road, Batu 5 here yesterday (Aug 21).

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said it received an emergency call at 5.22 pm and firefighters from Kota Sentosa station arrived at the scene about 15 minutes later.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the two-storey semi-permanent factory, identified as Liew Shin Huat, engulfed in flames.

The factory, measuring about 150 by 100 feet, was completely destroyed, while two nearby houses sustained about 30 per cent damage each and a semi-detached house about 75 per cent.

“The fire had also spread to two workers’ quarters located behind the factory. Firefighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading further to an adjacent factory,” a Bomba spokesperson said.

The operation was brought under control at 6.40 pm, with firefighters carrying out overhaul works to extinguish remaining pockets of fire.

“No injuries were reported in the incident,” the spokesperson added.

Firefighters from Batu Lintang, Tabuan Jaya and Siburan stations were also deployed to assist Kota Sentosa in the operation.

A total of 34 firefighters were involved, using three Fire Rescue Tenders (FRTs), a Compact Fire Rescue Tender (CFRT), a water tanker and a utility vehicle.

Police, Health Ministry personnel and Sarawak Energy personnel were also at the scene.
