KUCHING: Four Chinese nationals escaped unharmed after a midnight fire gutted three rental rooms above a café at Jalan Setia Raja, Tabuan Jaya, here early today .

The blaze, which broke out shortly after midnight, sent thick smoke pouring from the second floor of the building.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the incident involved a 20×40-foot upper-floor space containing three rental rooms built using gypsum board partitions.

All three rooms were completely destroyed in the fire. The rooms were occupied by four individuals, including three women, all Chinese nationals.

Fortunately, all occupants managed to flee to safety before firefighters arrived and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters from Tabuan Jaya and Batu Lintang stations were dispatched to the scene and used water sourced from a nearby fire hydrant to contain the blaze.

The fire was brought under control at 12.20am, after which firefighters carried out ventilation works to clear the smoke trapped inside the building.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred is still under investigation.
