KUCHING: A potential fire disaster was averted after firefighters swiftly contained a blaze involving piles of papers and files on the fourth floor of a building at Parkway Commercial Centre, Jalan Stutong Baru, yesterday evening (Oct 8).

A team from the Tabuan Jaya Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene, about nine kilometres away, following an emergency call at 7.46 pm.

“Smoke was seen billowing from the building’s fourth floor, and firemen used a circular saw to cut open a staircase gate on the ground floor to reach the affected area.

“Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire using water from the fire engine’s tank, bringing the blaze under control at 8 pm,” the department said in a statement last night.

No injuries were reported, and the structure of the building was not affected.

Meanwhile, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Papers burn inside the building during the incident.
