KUANTAN, Pahang: Five individuals, including two local men, suspected of involvement in migrant smuggling, were arrested in Raub following an 80-kilometre car chase last Friday.

Raub District Police Chief, Supt Mohd Shahril Abdul Rahman, said the suspects were arrested in front of the Dong Police Station at about 10:15 am after their car crashed.

He said a patrol team from the Gua Musang District Police Headquarters had earlier detected a Proton Preve carrying five individuals behaving suspiciously along Jalan Tanah Putih, Gua Musang, Kelantan.

“The driver refused to stop when ordered and sped off. Police gave chase and the suspects’ car crashed in front of the Dong Police Station after hitting a traffic light pole and another vehicle,” he said in a statement yesterday.

“Initial investigations revealed that the two local male suspects acted as transporters for the migrants, receiving payment to ferry the foreign nationals from Kelantan to Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

Checks found three Indonesian women without valid documents inside the vehicle, along with 34 pills suspected to be yaba and a packet believed to contain syabu.

Shahril said further investigations also found that the car’s registration number was fake.

The case is being investigated under Section 26J of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, and Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. – BERNAMA
