BAU: Five local men landed in police custody after a narcotics operation uncovered suspected syabu and alleged involvement in drug abuse.

Bau police chief Supt Mohd Haide A. Rahman said the operation was carried out by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) with assistance from the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division yesterday (Jul 8).

“The first arrest involved a 44-year-old labourer who was stopped along Ong Guan Cheng Bypass in Bau town.

“Inspections on the suspect led to the discovery of a cigarette box containing a plastic packet filled with 1.07g of suspected syabu, estimated to be worth RM100.

“He is being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for possession of dangerous drugs.

“The suspect also tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine and is being probed under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act,” he said.

Police later arrested the four other suspects, aged between 21 and 32, during follow-up operations around Kampung Bobak Sejinjang and Kampung Apar Singai.

The suspects, comprising a college student, a labourer, a mechanic and an unemployed man, all tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine during preliminary urine screening.

Mohd Haide said the student has been referred to the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) for further action under the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983, while the remaining three were arrested under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Initial investigations found that all five suspects admitted to consuming syabu on the same day they were arrested.

The suspect in possession of suspected syabu as well as the other three suspects are being held at Bau police lock-up pending further action.
