KUCHING: A Bangladeshi worker died after he was pinned between an iron pipe and the rear of an excavator at a construction site here on August 31.

The Sarawak Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) said preliminary investigations found that the excavator was operating when the incident occurred at about 1:45 pm.

“The victim sustained injuries and was taken to Sarawak General Hospital for treatment.

“He was later pronounced dead by medical personnel while receiving treatment at the hospital’s Emergency Department,” it said in a statement.

Following the incident, DOSH Sarawak issued a prohibition notice to the party involved, ordering all construction activities at the affected area to stop.

A non-interference order was also issued to preserve the scene until investigations are completed.

DOSH Sarawak said further investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.

It warned that legal action could be taken against employers or principals found negligent or in breach of provisions under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.

“Legal action will be taken against any employer or principal who is negligent and fails to comply with provisions under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.

“This is important to ensure that a safe and healthy working environment is always prioritised to protect workers’ lives and prevent workplace tragedies,” it said.
