KUCHING: A total of 647 schools across 12 districts in Sarawak will be temporarily closed from September 7 to 11 due to persistent severe haze conditions.
Sarawak Education Department’s Director, Omar Mahli, confirmed that the closure impacts 563 primary schools and 84 secondary schools.
The decision was finalised by state authorities following an assessment of air quality trends and school holiday surveillance across the affected regions.
“Based on our monitoring during the school holiday period, the haze situation does not show significant improvement in specific areas.
“Therefore, we have decided to close schools from September 7 until September 11 for all affected localities,” he stated during the press conference today.
The affected district education offices comprise Kuching, Padawan, Bau, Lundu, Samarahan, Simunjan, Serian, Sri Aman, Lubok Antu, Kanowit, Julau, and Meradong.
Schools located in districts outside the identified list will continue normal operations as scheduled.
Parents and guardians in the affected zones are advised to keep children indoors during the closure period to minimise exposure to hazardous airborne particulates.
