MIRI: Four bodies have been recovered from the Kampung Lereng Bukit landslide today (Jan 29), as search and rescue (SAR) efforts continue to locate the last missing victim.
Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed the recoveries and identified the last missing victim as 71-year-old Fatimah Dawi.
“Rescuers are working relentlessly to find her beneath the rubble,” he told reporters at the scene.
The landslide, which struck at around 2.55 am, involved two houses and 12 victims. Firefighters from Miri and Lopeng stations rushed to the scene following a distress call.
“At around 6 am, rescuers recovered the first body, a 16-year-old boy.
“At 10.40 am, they found the second victim, a 41-year-old woman, buried under the rubble.
“At 11.30 am, the third victim, an eight-year-old girl, was located. Just 10 minutes later, at 11.40 am, they found an 11-year-old girl nearby,” he said.
Alexson also clarified that the landslide involved 12 victims, not eight as initially reported. The other victims managed to survive the landslide incident.
The SAR operation has mobilised a total of 19 officers and 85 personnel from various rescue agencies.
