MIRI: Bekenu is set for a major transformation with the implementation of four infrastructure projects between now and 2028.
Bekenu assemblywoman Datuk Rosey Yunus disclosed this following a briefing with the Public Works Department (PWD) here on Wednesday.
“These are four significant projects for the Bekenu constituency, aimed at improving connectivity and enhancing the local economy,” she said.
The largest of the four projects, the road upgrading from Sepupok Junction Niah to Kampung Bakam Coastal Road, was initially announced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, during Hari Raya last year in Sepupok.
The project will focus on selective upgrades to sections of the existing road, including improvements to the road shoulders.
The project is expected to be completed by January 28, 2028, with a total allocation of RM157.92 million.
The upgrading of village roads from Kampung Rambai to Kampung Bulau aims to enhance road access between Kampung Rambai and Kampung Bulau, replacing the current reliance on river transport.
At present, parts of the route remain gravel roads, and certain stretches between Rambai and Sinup are yet to have proper road connectivity.
Once completed, this project will provide a seamless road link between Kampung Rambai, Sinup, Mutap and Bulau, ultimately connecting to the Pan Borneo Highway.
Additionally, two new bridges will be constructed – one over Sungai Sibuti and another smaller bridge between Mutap and Bulau.
The RM57 million project is set to be completed by February 26, 2028.
Currently, residents of Kampung Bulau rely on a suspension bridge, which is accessible only by foot or motorcycle.
The construction of the new Kampung Bulau bridge will allow vehicles to cross, significantly improving travel convenience and connectivity.
The bridge will link Kampung Bulau across the Pan Borneo Highway to Kampung Seberang Bulau and further to Tiris, shortening travel time and facilitating smoother access for villagers.
The RM6 million project is scheduled to be completed by February 27, 2027.
Another project, the long-awaited Bekenu Waterfront in Kampung Rambai will soon become a reality, with a contractor already appointed to carry out the works.
The project, valued at RM4.13 million, is set to commence on April 4 and will be completed within a year, by April 3, 2026.
The redevelopment aims to transform Kampung Rambai into a vibrant waterfront attraction, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the area and boosting local tourism.
Plans for a second phase of the waterfront project are also in place, which will extend the development further upstream along the river.
The second phase, estimated to cost RM8 million, is currently in the tendering process, Rosey said.
She emphasised that these four projects represent a significant milestone for the people of Bekenu.
“The improved connectivity will not only ease travel for residents but also open up opportunities for economic growth.
“These projects have been long-awaited, and now, with contractors appointed, they are finally becoming a reality,” she said.
