KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) will organise a free Community Health Screening Programme this Sunday (July 12) to improve public access to preventive healthcare while encouraging residents to monitor their health regularly.

MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the programme would be held at Bintawa Heng Ann Thian Miau Temple from 8:00 am until noon.

“We warmly invite members of the public to participate in our Free Community Health Screening Programme,” he said, adding that participants would receive blood glucose, blood pressure, and Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments without charge.

He told reporters this at a press conference at Level 3A, Committee Room, MBKS on Friday (July 10).

He said the first 400 participants who registered and completed the health screening would each receive a complimentary five-kilogramme packet of rice, sponsored by the Federation of Buddhist Association of Sarawak and Tay Motor.

“This initiative is another meaningful collaboration between MBKS and BMC under its corporate social responsibility efforts, aimed at bringing quality healthcare services closer to communities throughout Kuching South,” he said.

He stressed that illnesses, including diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, often developed silently without obvious symptoms, making regular health screenings essential for early detection, timely treatment and healthier lifestyle choices.

“Prevention is always better than cure and a simple health check today could make a significant difference to your future,” he said, urging residents to prioritise preventive healthcare through regular screenings.

Wee said that MBKS and BMC had previously organised similar programmes at Kuching South City Hall and Kenyalang Community Market.

Both programmes had received encouraging public participation and positive community response.

He also expressed appreciation to the Federation of Buddhist Association of Sarawak, Tay Motor and Bintawa Heng Ann Thian Miau Temple for supporting the programme through sponsorship and venue provision.

Wee encouraged residents, particularly those living in Bintawa and surrounding neighbourhoods, to attend the programme with family members, friends and neighbours to better understand their health conditions and seek professional medical advice when necessary.

He also thanked healthcare professionals, volunteers, councillors, committee members and the media for supporting the initiative, expressing confidence that continued collaboration would help build a healthier, happier and more resilient Kuching community.
