MIRI: A major emergency drill unfolded at Miri Airport on Thursday (Sept 25), pulling together 25 government agencies and private organisations in a full-scale exercise designed to sharpen preparedness for air disaster scenarios.

The operation brought in key players from the Fire and Rescue Department, the Royal Malaysia Police, Miri Hospital, the Civil Defence Force, the Miri Port Authority and even the Civil Aviation Fire Department of Brunei Darussalam.

The simulation tested rapid response, inter-agency coordination and the effectiveness of standard operating procedures in handling a potential air crash.

Once the mock operation wrapped up, officials held a post-mortem session to identify gaps and areas needing improvement.

Communication, long recognised as a stumbling block in past drills, once again topped the list of concerns.

Organisers stressed that clear, seamless communication systems are critical in preventing misinformation that could slow down rescue efforts and put lives at risk.

Regular drills of this scale, they said, will continue to ensure all agencies remain at peak readiness, safeguarding passenger safety and strengthening crisis management capabilities at the airport.
