KOTA SAMARAHAN: Celebrations such as Gawai Dayak play an important role in strengthening relationships among Sarawak’s multi-ethnic and multi-religious communities, reflecting the state’s longstanding culture of unity and mutual respect.

Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Brahim said festive occasions in Sarawak go beyond cultural observance and serve as a bridge that brings people of different backgrounds together.

“Celebrations such as Gawai Dayak play an important role in strengthening relationships among Sarawak’s multi-ethnic and multi-religious communities,” he said.

He said this when officiating the Pengerami Mantar Gawai Dayak 2026 programme at Kampung Merdang Gayam, here yesterday (May 16).

He said the practice of mutual respect and visiting one another during festive seasons remains a key pillar in maintaining harmony in Sarawak.

“In Sarawak, unity is not just a slogan, but something practiced in daily life when people of different races can sit together, celebrate together, and support one another,” he added.

Hamzah also praised the strong cooperation among residents of Kampung Merdang Gayam, Kampung Merdang Lumut, and Kampung Sejiram in carrying out community and cultural activities.

He noted that such community programmes help preserve the cultural heritage of the Dayak community while strengthening ties and fostering tolerance among younger generations.

At the same time, he reminded the community to celebrate festivals in moderation, with emphasis on family values and togetherness.

As part of support for local development, he announced a total allocation of RM100,000 for three Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK) — Kampung Merdang Lumut, Kampung Merdang Gayam, and Kampung Sejiram.
