KUCHING: Plans to develop a motorsport circuit in Gedong remain at the zoning and land planning stage, with gazettement and infrastructure coordination required before the project can proceed to detailed design.

Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim, who is also president of the Sarawak Motorsports Association (SMA), said the circuit forms part of a broader development ecosystem in the area rather than a standalone project.

“Now we just have to wait. When the zoning is complete, then I believe the Land Survey Department, the Sarawak Premier’s office or Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah office will call us to sit down on the planning for the circuit,” he told reporters today (May 2) at the Torque of Borneo 2026 programme.

He explained that the motorsport facility is planned as the final phase of a larger development that includes supporting infrastructure, education facilities and light industry components.

“Because the circuit is the last phase. The relevant state planning authorities need to zone the parcel of land and gazette it first. Then only will they determine who is going to develop the industry, who is going to develop the school and the other components,” he added.

He said the site has already been identified but emphasised that approvals must be completed before the project can move into the next stage.

“It’s still a long way to go. At least another two years,” he said, referring to the expected timeline before the circuit reaches its design phase.

He also noted that the SMA would assist with track design and sanctioning once approvals are obtained and the association is formally invited to participate.

Earlier progress, he added, is expected for proposed drift and drag racing facilities in Balai Ringin, with a decision on those plans anticipated by the end of the year.

“That one should happen faster than the Gedong track. By the end of the year we should have a decision already,” he said.
