KUCHING: Representatives from Germany’s industrial field have expressed strong interest in Sarawak’s transport and logistics development, following discussions with the state government on potential collaboration in green mobility, infrastructure, and smart transportation systems.

The delegation from the Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MGCC), led by Datuk Steven Aroki, met Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, during a courtesy call and roundtable session held at Bangunan Baitulmakmur here today (May 8) in conjunction with the 6th German-Malaysian Business Forum in Kuching.

According to the ministry’s press statement, the discussions focused on key areas including public transport development, aviation connectivity, port infrastructure, logistics modernisation, and sustainable transport solutions.

Both sides also exchanged views on advancing heavy vehicle technology and strengthening the commercial transport sector.

Lee outlined Sarawak’s long-term transport transformation plans under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, with a strong emphasis on low-carbon and technology-driven mobility solutions.

A key highlight was the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS), which includes the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system powered by hydrogen technology.

The system will be supported by 55 hydrogen-powered feeder buses, reinforcing Sarawak’s push towards green public transport.

He also briefed the delegation on efforts to improve regional connectivity through AirBorneo, as well as ongoing upgrades to airports, ports, and lorry terminals to support trade, tourism, and economic growth.

Lee welcomed stronger engagement between Sarawak and German industries, especially in areas related to smart mobility, clean energy transportation, logistics innovation, industrial supply chains, and transport infrastructure development.

He expressed hope that the engagement would pave the way for stronger bilateral cooperation and mutually beneficial partnerships between Sarawak and Germany in the transport and industrial sectors.
