SIMANGGANG: Sarawak’s education initiatives now include the Sarawak Dual Language Programme Assessment Test (UP-DLP) to track primary students’ English proficiency and build their confidence.

Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Francis Harden Hollis said the UP-DLP was introduced following the abolition of the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR).

“The implementation of this initiative will enable the government to identify weaknesses and subsequently introduce appropriate interventions to address them, helping students build self-confidence.”

He was speaking at the Community Development Programme organised by the Sri Aman District Council (MDSA) at Rumah Reggie Beria, San Kemantan, Undop here today.

Harden, who is also Simanggang assemblyman, highlighted that efforts to produce quality human capital are further strengthened through various educational initiatives by the Sarawak government.

This includes the Sarawak Free Higher Education Scheme (FTES), book vouchers, Free Laptop Scheme, Graduates Return to Sarawak Scheme (I-GPS), Special Assistance for Sarawak Students, and others.

He added that in Simanggang, the government has established Sarawak Skills, which offers a variety of courses suited to current labour market demands for secondary school leavers.

Additionally, he said Sarawak Skills also provides short-term courses for the local community to enhance their knowledge in specific fields.

In this regard, he urged the people to continue giving strong support to the Sarawak government under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg so that the state’s development vision and mission can be realised.

Earlier, the MDSA Community Development Programme focused on raising awareness about cleanliness and community well-being in longhouses, with residents also treated to several talks by government agencies.

Among the talks delivered during the programme were on drug abuse, prevention of infectious diseases, updates on welfare aid schemes and the importance of village shop licenses.
