LUBOK ANTU: About 200 residents here benefited from a rural outreach programme under the 24th Asian Congress on Occupational Health (ACOH) 2026 on Wednesday (Apr 8).

The Legacy Impact project, held at Rumah Ngindang in Rantau Kemayau Manis, was supported by Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) and aimed at bridging the gap between professional occupational health standards and the needs of rural communities.

Participants received health screenings, dental check-ups and eye examinations, while safety awareness was enhanced through a household safety talk and a hands-on demonstration on the proper use of fire extinguishers.

ACOH 2026 Congress chair Dr. Abu Hasan Samad said the Legacy Impact initiative was designed to deliver meaningful and lasting benefits not only to Rumah Ngindang residents but also surrounding longhouse communities.

“Beyond the immediate benefits of dental and health screenings, we hope the programme will contribute towards improving the community’s quality of life while strengthening awareness of safety practices within the longhouse environment,” he said in a statement.

He added that such initiatives reflect the congress’s broader mission to promote occupational health and safety not only in workplaces but also at the community level.

The initiative also saw the establishment of a mini library within the longhouse to promote reading and knowledge-sharing, supporting long-term community development.

The project was carried out in collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Betong, Sri Aman Division Health Department, the Physiotherapy and Dental units of Sri Aman Hospital, Nanga Stamang Health Clinic, Sarawak State Health Department, Rotary Club of Kuching and Jee Kwong Optical Group.

Organised by the Academy of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Malaysia, ACOH 2026 will be held from Aug 5 to 8 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), bringing together regional and international experts to discuss emerging issues and innovations in occupational health and safety.

Registration for the congress is now open. For details, visit www.acoh2026.com.
