SARATOK: River safety is crucial, particularly for students who travel to school by boat, says Deputy Minister of Transport (Maritime and Riverine) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep.

Henry stressed the importance of wearing life jackets when crossing rivers to prevent unwanted incidents.

“I hope that through this large-scale campaign, there will be no more heartbreaking incidents like in Lundu last year,” he said when officiating the River Safety and Cleanliness Programme held at SK Mudong, Roban recently.

The two-day programme, organised by the Sarawak Rivers Board in collaboration with various agencies, aimed to raise public awareness on the importance of maintaining river safety and cleanliness, especially for users in rural areas.

As a symbolic gesture of environmental conservation, he released 500 fish into the Mudong River as part of efforts to protect the natural ecosystem.

The programme also saw participation from the Natural Resources and Environment Board Sarawak (NREB), Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and other agencies.
