MIRI: Hobbies and collectibles have the potential to develop into an industry that creates economic opportunities for young people, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.
The Senadin assemblyman said activities such as gaming and collecting could help participants develop skills that could later be applied in areas including graphic design, content creation, photography, event management, retail and e-commerce.
“Do not underestimate a hobby because something that begins as an interest can also open up new opportunities.
“From being a player or collector, one can develop skills in areas such as graphic design, content creation, photography, event management, retail or e-commerce and eventually become an entrepreneur,” he said.
He said this when delivering his speech at the Prize Presentation Ceremony of the Digimon GP Borneo & Hobbies Expo 2026 on Sunday (Sept 6).
Lee also highlighted the role of games such as Digimon in developing strategic thinking and decision-making skills while encouraging social interaction among players.
He added that the seventh edition of the event had recorded encouraging growth, with participation from Sarawak, Peninsular Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.
“The participation of visitors from outside Sarawak also contributed to economic activity in Miri through their spending on accommodation, food, transportation and other services during the programme,” he said.
Lee hoped more events focusing on sports, culture, youth and community activities could be organised in Miri to support the city’s tourism sector and local economy.
He also expressed hope that the Digimon GP Borneo & Hobbies Expo would eventually develop into a recognised hobby and collectibles event across the Borneo region.
