BINTULU: The construction of the Homeless Transit Centre (TTG) for the Bintulu Division has been fully completed and is expected to begin operations in October this year.

Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, said the construction of the TTG is a key initiative by the state government to provide a safer, more dignified, and inclusive temporary shelter for the homeless.

“We are very grateful to the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) for allowing the use of this site. Previously, we had the ‘Temuai’ shelter, but its condition was very poor.

“So we decided to build a completely new facility instead of refurbishing the old one,” she said during a working visit to the TTG Bintulu on Wednesday.

The new building also houses the Community Social Support Centre (CSSC), a community support centre that can be utilised by non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community leaders, and government agencies to organise social wellbeing programmes.

According to Fatimah, the TTG is not just a place for sleeping, eating, and bathing, but also functions as an integrated intervention centre that includes health screenings, profiling, counselling, motivational sessions, and skills training to help the homeless break out of their cycle of life.

“We want them to leave this place with new confidence and skills so they can live independently and secure employment,” she explained.

As a mark of continued concern, the Sarawak government, through Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has approved an allocation of RM1.8 million for the operation of all four TTGs located in Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri.

TTG Bintulu is the third facility to be completed after Kuching and Sibu, while the TTG in Miri is expected to begin operations this August.
