KUCHING: A man and his family in 10th Mile have received assistance from Hope Place Kuching as they struggle with financial hardship.
Chia Yong Hua, 52, once worked in construction operating heavy machinery, but his life changed in 2017 when he was diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension. By 2018, he had lost his eyesight and undergone a right-leg amputation, leaving him unable to work.
Chia now lives with his wife, Nyet Lee, 51, and their two school-going children, aged 10 and 13.
Nyet Lee previously ran a small kolo mee stall but was forced to close it due to poor sales.
Today, the family survives on RM250 monthly welfare aid and her dwindling savings.
Her responsibilities extend beyond her immediate family, as she also cares for her two brothers with Down syndrome, who live with another sibling working full-time.
With her husband’s disability, two children, and two brothers to care for, Nyet Lee is unable to take up employment.
Hope Place Kuching is supporting the family with basic food aid, noting that Chia’s case highlights the struggles of households burdened by both chronic illness and heavy caregiving responsibilities.
The organisation continues to appeal for public donations to assist vulnerable families here.
