SERIAN: A 37-year-old woman was found dead after a fire destroyed a house at KM23, Jalan Tebedu, Kampung Tubih Batu Raung, here earlier today (July 4).

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the charred remains of the woman, identified as Nurul Farhana Amerudin, were discovered inside the bathroom after firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Her 65-year-old mother sustained second-degree burns to 38 per cent of her body, including the face, neck, back, hands and soles of her feet.

She was taken to Serian Hospital by villagers for treatment before firefighters arrived at the scene.

Bomba said it received an emergency call at 12.29 am and dispatched firefighters from the Serian station, assisted by personnel from the Siburan station.

“The single-storey permanent house measuring 48 by 70 feet was completely destroyed in the fire.

“The victim’s remains were recovered with the assistance of police and medical personnel before being handed over to the police for further action,” it said.

The operation, involving 18 firefighters, was completed at 3.45 am.

The cause of the fire and the estimated losses are under investigation.
