KUCHING: Indonesia has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling forest and land fires during the haze period.
The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Kuching said in a statement today that it acknowledged concerns raised by the people of Sarawak over recent air quality developments, adding that Indonesia placed importance on the health and well-being of communities on both sides of the border.
KJRI said its authorities are carrying out round-the-clock efforts including aerial water-bombing and cloud seeding to address air quality concerns raised by Sarawak.
“The Government of the Republic of Indonesia continues to execute comprehensive, relentless, and proactive measures to prevent and extinguish forest and land fires across affected regions,” it said.
It said the measures included heightened early-warning patrols, rapid ground firefighting deployments, continuous water-bombing sorties, targeted weather-modification operations, and enforcement action against unlawful burning.
KJRI Kuching said Indonesia remained committed to close communication and regional cooperation with stakeholders, including under the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution, to reinforce joint preventive strategies and minimise transboundary effects.
It added that it continued to closely monitor developments and coordinate with relevant Sarawak authorities, expressing hope that the efforts would swiftly help air quality and daily activities in Sarawak and surrounding regions return to normal.
