KUCHING: An Indonesian woman was sentenced to four months in jail on Wednesday (Feb 28) for entering Malaysia without a valid travel permit.
Jamilah, 22, pleaded guilty to one charge under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, as read under Section 6(3) of the same act, before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman.
According to the charge, she was in the country when she was arrested at a shop building in Batu Kawa, around 1.15am on Nov 23, 2023.
The offence can be punished by a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or both and can be subjected to a maximum of six strokes of the cane.
Judge Afidah ordered the accused to be handed over to the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) after serving the prison sentence.
According to the case facts, during the incident, a police team raided a shop building and then detained a foreign woman.
As a result of the investigation, it was found that the accused did not have valid travel documents besides checking at JIM found no movement in and out of the accused to Sarawak, Malaysia.
The prosecution of the case was handled by deputy public prosecutor Iezzah Iburdanisha Ibrahim while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
