KUCHING: Sarawak will remain focused on existing constituencies following confirmation that the proposed redelineation of Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) will not be tabled this year.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said Sarawak will proceed with preparations for the next state election based on the current 82 DUN seats, as the redelineation exercise is still not expected to be brought to Parliament this year.
She said this follows confirmation from Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof, who clarified earlier that the proposal involving 17 additional seats remains in its preliminary stages under the Election Commission (EC) process.
“So this is clear. I think it already indicates that there will be no redelineation exercise this year, as clearly stated by the Deputy Prime Minister and even without it, I believe we will focus on the seats we currently have,” she said.
She said this when met by reporters after officiating the Kampung Malaysia Jaya and Kampung Tunku Smart LED Street Lighting launch at Kampung Malaysia Jaya Multipurpose Hall on Sunday (Jun 28).
She added that the timing of the state election remains uncertain, as the dissolution of the DUN lies with the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, while the current term ends in February 2027.
“Therefore, until that term expires, the state election may be held at any time,” she added.
She stressed that Sarawak will continue to focus on delivering development programmes and ensuring they reach the people on the ground.
“Regardless of whether additional seats are introduced or not, we will continue working as usual. That is what matters,” she said.
