KUCHING: The Mayor’s Walk 2026 scheduled for Sunday has been postponed due to the current haze conditions affecting the city, with public safety prioritised.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) said the event originally scheduled for Aug 16 at 6 am, would be postponed to a later date.
MBKS said the decision was made in the interest of the health and safety of all participants, volunteers, officials and members of the public.
The council said the postponement took into consideration the current air quality, which could pose health risks to those participating in the outdoor event.
“The new date for Mayor’s Walk 2026 will be announced in due course,” MBKS said in a press statement today.
The postponement comes as haze conditions continue to affect Kuching, prompting growing concerns over outdoor activities and potential exposure to unhealthy air.
MBKS said participants who had already collected their Mayor’s Walk 2026 T-shirts should keep them safely until the event is rescheduled.
The council reminded participants that the T-shirts would still be required as part of the event attire when the Mayor’s Walk is held on its new date.
The annual Mayor’s Walk is among MBKS’ community-oriented activities aimed at encouraging public participation, healthy lifestyles and greater interaction among residents.
The event typically brings together residents, community groups, government agencies, sponsors, partners and other stakeholders for a morning walk around Kuching.
MBKS also expressed its sincere apology for any inconvenience caused by the postponement, particularly to participants who had made preparations for the event.
The council thanked all registered participants, sponsors, partners and members of the public for their understanding and continued support despite the change.
MBKS said further details regarding the rescheduled date would be communicated once a new date has been determined.
The postponement also reflects the council’s emphasis on ensuring outdoor programmes are conducted under conditions that do not compromise public health and safety.
Participants are advised to retain their event T-shirts and await further announcements from MBKS regarding the replacement date and arrangements for the postponed event.
The Mayor’s Walk 2026 was initially scheduled to begin at 6 am on Sunday, Aug 16, but will now take place on a date to be announced.
