KUCHING: A long-awaited RM7-million alternative pipeline project aimed at addressing chronic low water pressure and frequent supply disruptions in the Jagoi area is now expected to be completed by August this year.

The project, implemented by the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB), involves the installation of a 355mm pipeline stretching from the Bau traffic lights to the Sri-ieng Booster Pump Station.

It is designed to significantly improve water distribution capacity and stabilise supply for residents in the affected areas.

Initially, the project had been scheduled for completion ahead of the Gawai festival in June, bringing early relief to households preparing for the annual celebration.

However, current progress indicates that the revised timeline will extend beyond the original target.

Deputy Minister for Transport (Riverine and Marine), Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, revealed that the project has reached approximately 30 per cent completion.

While acknowledging the delay, he expressed optimism that the work will be fully completed by August if progress continues as planned.

“This project is crucial for the people in Jagoi who have endured persistent water pressure issues and supply interruptions for a long time,” he said.

The need for the pipeline upgrade has become increasingly urgent as population growth and rising demand have placed additional strain on the existing water infrastructure.

Once completed, the new pipeline is expected to enhance water pressure, ensure a more reliable supply, and reduce the frequency of disruptions in the area.

At the earth-breaking ceremony in December last year, Henry said the new pipeline would supply an additional two million litres per day (2MLD) of treated water to the existing reservoir at Pejiru.

Upon completion of the project, he added, there will be two pipelines from Bau – one on each side of the road – to cater for treated water supply to the Jagoi and Krokong areas.

He also noted that the reservoir would support water supply to the immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (1CQS) complex in Serikin.

Henry expressed hope that the alternative pipeline would resolve the water woes, ensuring uninterrupted supply in Jagoi, Gumbang, and Padang Pan area.

Meanwhile, the water supply from JBALB to Kampung Stass had been restored.

The leakage on the main grid that occurred at the Jalan Sebobok area, Kpg Plaman Bu’ow was detected on March 18.

Repair works then were initiated and completed, restoring the water supply to Kampung Stass, Kpg Skibang and Kpg Sebobok.
