BAU: The volunteer-driven CleanUp Pan Borneo Campaign has become a strong example of how public involvement can raise awareness on the importance of keeping the state’s highways clean.
Deputy Minister for Transport Sarawak (Riverine and Marine) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said that cleaning up rubbish along the Pan Borneo route helps preserve the environment’s beauty and reflects the community’s care for the state’s development.
“We want the public to play their part in ensuring that Sarawak’s roads remain clean and well-maintained, as these main routes represent the image of our state,” he said during the CleanUp Pan Borneo campaign held here recently.
He said the campaign, which began in Bau, has inspired the public to appreciate the importance of safeguarding the beauty of Sarawak’s rapidly developing landscape, while also helping to shift third-class mindsets regarding public cleanliness.
Henry, who is also Tasik Biru assemblyman, said following discussions between the Bau District Office, Bau District Council and the Public Works Department (JKR), the responsibility of placing rubbish bins at several locations along the route has been assigned to the Pan Borneo Highway Branch.
During the programme, Henry also expressed appreciation to the individual who initiated the campaign movement last October, Tracey E. Hughes.
Earlier, a volunteer team comprising members of the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) N.02 Tasik Biru and N.08 Satok carried out a gotong-royong to clean the Pan Borneo route from Kampung Stenggang to Jalan Kampung Senibong Singai.
