KAPIT: The proposed riverbank and slope protection works, as well as the Kapit Waterfront extension have now started to be implemented by the appointed contractor.

According to a news report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), the project, which is expected to be completed in 2024, has been approved by the State Planning Authority for 2021.

However, it started somewhat late due to the constraints that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The scope of this project includes the construction of river banks, strengthening the slopes to prevent erosion, and constructing a waterfront that can be used by the public as a place for recreation.

The riverbanks are very synonymous with the people of Kapit because their lives and also their main transportation are dependent on the river, which has been the main connection of the people since a long time ago.

Although river transportation, especially express boats, is decreasing and almost non-existent for some destinations (due to the completion of several road networks), river activities are still popular in this area, especially speed boat racing, rafting, and so on.

Thus, when there are water sports activities, the construction of the riverbank to some extent provides convenience to visitors and spectators to enjoy the experience.
