KAPIT: Kapit has welcomed the proposed creation of DUN Melekun, one of 17 new state constituencies under Sarawak’s electoral boundaries review.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Native Laws and Customs) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat said the new seat would strengthen representation and service delivery.
“Given Kapit’s vast geographical area, almost comparable in size to Pahang, the creation of a new constituency is timely and necessary to better represent our people,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Sept 9).
Jamit, who is also Bukit Goram assemblyman, said the geographical and physical characteristics of Kapit made the proposed constituency particularly important for improving accessibility and public service delivery.
He thanked the Sarawak government and the Election Commission (EC) for allocating one of the 17 proposed new seats to Kapit through the creation of DUN Melekun.
Jamit made the remarks during a visit to inspect the Proposed Recommendations for the Review of the Delineation of Federal and State Electoral Constituencies in Sarawak displayed at the lobby of the State Office Complex, Jalan Bleteh, recently.
The visit was held in conjunction with his visit to the constituency to attend to matters concerning his constituents.
Also accompanying him were Pemanca Pasang Tuba, Penghulu James Sandak Bidai and Kapit District Council deputy chairman Councillor Martin Bilun.
The EC has displayed the proposed recommendations for one month from Sept 1, 2026, at respective district offices across Sarawak and through its official portal, myspr.spr.gov.my
The display period is intended to provide members of the public with an opportunity to inspect the proposed recommendations and submit objections in accordance with the prescribed process.
