MULU: A total of 10 local media practitioners from various agencies are taking part in the inaugural expedition organised by the Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA) to Gunung Api, located in Mulu National Park, starting today.

The four-day, three-night expedition is held in conjunction with Sarawak Day celebrations on July 22, as an initiative to highlight the uniqueness of the state’s tourism products, particularly the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

KDJA president Ronnie Teo Teck Wei said the expedition is a continuation of the association’s annual climbing project, which began in 2018 at Mount Kinabalu.

It reflects the Sarawak Premier’s continued support in encouraging media professionals to challenge themselves beyond their work roles.

“This year, for our fifth edition, we chose to bring this challenge to Mulu Pinnacles, exclusively for KDJA members.

“We also hope to continue our collaboration with the Sarawak government in organising future editions of the Kinabalu and Mulu projects,” he said in a statement today.

Among the participating media representatives are those from The Borneo Post, Malaysian National News Agency (BERNAMA), Dayak Daily, Suara Sarawak, CatsFM, See Hua and TVS.

The expedition begins with visits to Deer Cave and Lang Cave in Mulu National Park on the first day, followed by a nine-kilometre trek from Long Litut to Camp 5 on the second day.

The third day marks the highlight of the expedition, which is a challenging ascent to the sharp limestone peak formations known as the Mulu Pinnacles, while the fourth day involves the return journey to Long Litut and back to Kuching.

The programme is supported by the Sarawak Government, in line with Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s efforts to boost the promotion of the state’s tourist destinations in conjunction with Sarawak Day. – BERNAMA
